Hoardings displayed at a busy junction in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) will install modern LED billboards and retro-reflective signboards at key destinations. The move aims to make travel easier and more engaging for visitors while giving a fresh digital push to tourism promotion.
OTDC recently initiated the process to select a technical partner to implement the project. The initiative aims to enhance the experience of tourists and improve visibility of key destinations through digital technology and high-quality signage. OTDC identified 20 prime sites, including Puri beach, Swargadwar, Blue Flag beach, Konark bus stand, and Panthanivas. These systems will feature cloud-based software, wireless connectivity, and 4K video playback, enabling real-time content updates for tourism campaigns and public information.Alongside digital displays, large retro-reflective hoardings — measuring up to 12 metres by 6 metres — will be installed at major junctions such as Baidaspur, Chandanpur, and Pipili toll gate to improve night-time visibility and safety for travellers.“Odisha has so much to offer, but sometimes visitors struggle to find clear directions or updates on events. These one-of-a-kind boards will make navigation simpler and keep tourists informed,” said an OTDC official.
Tourists welcomed the plan. “When I visited Puri last year, I relied on locals for directions. Digital boards will be a big help for people like us who come from outside the state,” said Ananya Sharma, a traveller from Delhi.Experts said the initiative will boost Odisha’s image as a smart tourism destination. “This is a step towards blending technology with heritage. It will make the experience more interactive and attract younger travellers,” said tourism analyst Rajiv Sethi. The project includes a 5-year maintenance plan to ensure uninterrupted service. OTDC invited bids from reputed agencies, with plans to finalise the selection process by January-end. Officials said the installations will start early this year.“This is about creating a welcoming environment for tourists and showcasing Odisha’s cultural richness in a modern way. This is a fine step taken by the govt. Key tourist places should be covered in the project,” Sethi added.
