Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi launched career guidance exposure visits for government school students in Chennai on Monday (September 1, 2025).
Speaking at the event at College of Engineering, he said, “Through these awareness programmes, students will get to see what colleges are like. This will encourage them not to be afraid of colleges. They would get to see the differences in labs, libraries, teachers, and other facilities in Class 12, and it would help them make informed decisions.”
This year, a total of 1,46,412 government school students will participate in the exposure trips and visit 722 government and government-aided colleges in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education.
In an effort to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) from 47% to 100%, the government developed the Higher Education guidebook for students of Class 9-12 to increase awareness about higher education.
Launched in 2022, the exposure visits were began to ensure that government school students from disadvantaged backgrounds have access to higher education.
According to a release from the department in 2023, 2,76,584 out of 3,97,809 of government school students were admitted to higher education institutions, while in 2024, as many as 2,59,129 students, out of 3,36,770 government school students, pursued higher education.
Last year, 15,70,919 students studying in 6,218 government higher secondary and high schools received guidance for higher education under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, the release added.
