A 25-year-old patient died after he was allegedly left unattended for hours at Kanpur Dehat Medical College in Uttar Pradesh, according to a report.
The man, identified as Sundar, was admitted to the emergency ward at around 1.15 pm on Saturday by unknown individuals. He was allegedly not given proper treatment, as his body remained on the bed for nearly 11 hours.
He was unconscious at the time of admission. According to the doctors, he was vomiting continuously and was in a critical condition. He was referred to Hallet Hospital in Kanpur for treatment, India Today reported.
However, since no one was there to look after him, hospital staff informed the local police station and asked for a security guard to escort the patient.
Officials say no guard came, leaving him alone. As the hours went by without transfer or proper care, Sundar’s condition got worse, and he died around 11 pm, according to the report.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the body was left in the ward after his death, forcing other patients to leave the room due to the foul smell of the decomposition of the body overnight, the report said.
The incident came to light on Sunday morning after the attendants of other patients flagged the situation.
When the District Magistrate of Kanpur Dehat heard about the incident, he visited the hospital, showed his displeasure over the negligence, and ordered an inquiry. He also told the hospital to remove the body immediately. Around 9 am, an outsourced sweeper finally moved the body to the mortuary.
The police say they sent a guard, but the hospital didn’t have an ambulance, while the medical staff claim they couldn’t move the patient because there was no security support, raising questions over negligence in the incident.
The principal of the medical college said an internal investigation has been ordered. Chief Medical Superintendent AK Singh also visited the spot after the District Magistrate’s orders.
