India’s Pawan Bartwal (55kg) delivered the biggest shock of the tournament, dismantling second seed and World Cup Brazil gold medallist Altynbek Nursultan of Kazakhstan with a stunning 5:0 win to secure his first international medal at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex on Monday.

His breakout moment headlined another flawless day for the hosts, with Sumit (75kg) and Naveen (90kg) also cruising into the medal rounds and pushing India’s tally to seven assured podium finishes.

Pawan’s Breakthrough

For Pawan, this wasn’t just a win, it was the payoff to more than 15 years of quiet graft.

The Services boxer, who began competing in the early 2010s, stepped into the ring as the clear underdog but walked out looking every bit the seasoned pro.

Backed by a roaring home crowd, he controlled the pace, kept Nursultan trapped on the ropes, and picked his counters with icy precision, completely flipping the script on the division’s second seed.

“Nursultan is a good boxer; he was a champion at the World Boxing Cup in Brazil this year. I was nervous at the beginning, but fighting at home gave me confidence," Pawan said. “This is my first international medal, and I am extremely proud. This tournament means a lot to me."

Sumit and Naveen Keep the Momentum Rolling

Sumit kept the Indian momentum intact with a commanding 5:0 win over Korea’s Kim Hyeon-tae. A sharp early punch to the face set the tone as he stayed aggressive, dictated the pace, and forced Kim into a purely defensive shell.

Naveen, a Strandja 2024 medallist, wrapped up the session with a thoughtful, disciplined showing against Kazakhstan’s Bekzat Tangatar. Using his height and reach smartly, he controlled the distance and pulled away after a close opening round to claim yet another unanimous Indian win.

Big Bouts Incoming

Session 3 later tonight features two highly anticipated Indian clashes: Jadumani Singh (50kg) takes on Kazakhstan’s rising prospect Ongarov Nurzat, while Hitesh (70kg) faces top seed Sewon Okazawa, the 2022 Asian Games medallist known for razor-sharp technical precision.
