Manchester City star routed West Ham 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to briefly take the top spot in the English top-flight before Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal managed a 1-0 win over Everton on the road to reclaim the lead ahead of Christmas.

Erling Haaland netted on either side of a Tijjani Reijnders goal to help the former champions over the line in comfortable fashion. The brace took Haaland’s PL goal tally to 104, as he surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s record, in 122 games fewer.

Reijnders’ goal in particular came on the back of some exquisite bit of play as Rayan Cherki, Haaland and the Dutchman linkedup incredible well to deposit the ball into the back of the net, sending Guardiola into a fit of ecstasy.

City opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute of the game, and it seemed as though the Hammers were in for a long night. However, Guardiola noted further areas for improvement.

“In the first half, we controlled the game but even with that, we were not in the right places to create, and we talked about that. We needed to create more chances to be solid," he said.

“In the second half, when they stepped up, we continued to play poorly. We did not follow the right process to do what we needed to do.

“If they had scored to make it 2-1, West Ham could have made it 2-2."

Guardiola praised Haaland’s contribution to the team and highlighted the impact he, along with Phil Foden and Nico Riley, brought to the game.

“There were many good things. Offensively, Erling. I always have to thank Erling for the goals, but today thanks to him, Phil, and Nico, they helped us to play this type of game," he said.

“Defensively, we are improving. We are visualising it with the ball," he added.
