The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has informed a Delhi court that the Popular Front of India (PFI) was attempting to procure arms from neighbouring countries and provide arms training to its members. This revelation was shared by NIA’s special public prosecutor, Rahul Tyagi, following an in-camera court proceeding on Saturday.

Special Judge (NIA) Prashant Sharma was presiding over the hearing concerning charges against 20 accused PFI leaders. Tyagi, speaking to reporters outside the court, reiterated that PFI leaders were not only trying to procure arms but were also sending their members to Syria to gain tactical knowledge from ISIS, intending to implement these tactics in India. He further revealed that the PFI had organised specific hit squads to surveil leaders of BJP, RSS, and VHP.

The prosecutor accused the group of being formed with the objective of radicalising the youth to establish a caliphate and Sharia law in India. He highlighted that the PFI was organising camps to provide arms training and radicalise the youth to wage ‘Jihad’ against India, for which they were collecting funds.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 23. It is noteworthy that in September 2022, the Central government banned PFI and several of its associates for five years under a strict anti-terror law, accusing them of having connections with global terror groups like ISIS.
