Praveen Kumar, who was serving as Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), had been holding additional charge of the BSF post for the past month.

Praveen Kumar will serve as BSF Director General from the date he assumes charge until September 30, 2030.
The Ministry of Home Affairs appointed Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, as the new Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF). Praveen Kumar, who was serving as Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), had been holding additional charge of the BSF post for the past month.
In a related move, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has named Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, a 1990-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, as the new Director General of the ITBP.
According to the government order, Praveen Kumar will serve as BSF Director General from the date he assumes charge until September 30, 2030, the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor will take over as ITBP Director General until October 31, 2026, subject to similar conditions.
The formal appointment comes about a month after Praveen Kumar was given additional charge of the BSF following the retirement of then Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary. Daljit Singh Chawdhary handed over charge to Praveen Kumar in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, during the DGs–IGs national police conference- a departure from the usual practice of holding the ceremony at the BSF headquarters in New Delhi. At the time, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had said Praveen Kumar would hold the additional charge “till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders".
Praveen Kumar’s Track Record
Before taking over as the 35th Director General of the ITBP in October last year, Praveen Kumar served in several key roles at the state and central levels. He worked in the Intelligence Bureau from 2009 and earlier served as Deputy Inspector General of the Midnapore Range, leading counter-insurgency operations in Naxal-affected areas of West Bengal.
As ITBP chief, Praveen Kumar announced the setting up of 10 all-women forward posts along the 3,488-km India–China border, stretching from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Diphu La in Arunachal Pradesh.
