Purnima 2026: Date, Timings, Rituals and Significance

Purnima, or the Full Moon, is considered the most luckiest and auspicious day in Hinduism. This day is dedicated to honor Lord Vishnu. People observe fast on this day and offer their sincere prayers to Lord Vishnu.

They worship Lord Vishnu in the form of Lord Satyanarayan and perform Satyanarayan Puja on this day.In North India, the full moon day is called Purnima. However, in South India, the full moon day is known as Pournami or Pournima, and fasting on this day is known as Pournami Vratam.The full moon has its own religious and spiritual importance because the moon rays that falls on earth are considered holy and divine on this particular day.

It is believed that fasting on this particular day can be helpful in reducing anxiety, depression, and tension if you sit under the moon light and perform some spiritual practices.According to astrology, the moon is associated with the mind, emotions, feelings, water, and mother. People who have weak moon in their birth chart such as —the sixth, eighth, or twelfth—or who have the moon with a malefic planet—Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu— they must offer prayers to the moon and offer arghya to it on this Purnima Tithi. By performing a pooja for the Moon, one can get rid of all Moon-related suffering.
