A Delhi court has ruled that the use of the Hindi word "R***I" insults the modesty of a woman and casts aspersion on her character.

A Delhi Court convicted a man on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman and said that the use of the Hindi word “R***I" casts an aspersion on her character.

Dwarka court in the national capital said that the words spoken by the accused are “intended to insult the modesty" of the complainant woman.

The court’s remarks came while hearing a case where the woman had alleged that a man abused her by using filthy/abusive language, insulting her modesty and threatening to rape her.

“It is bound to insult the modesty of any woman. The words also mean that she is engaged in sexual intercourse with various people. Hence, the court is of the view that the words spoken by the accused are intended to insult the modesty of the complainant," the court observed in its order.

Taking a firm view on the matter, the court said that the word in question “is not a simple insult" but attacks the sex of a woman.

“The words are not a simple insult, but they directly hit at the sex of a woman, and it also shows that the word is intended to mean that the woman is promiscuous and it casts an aspersion on her character," the court noted.
