Ranchi: Despite several extensions of the last date for admission to undergraduate courses, thousands of seats are still vacant in many affiliated colleges of the Ranchi University (RU).
University officials said many students opting for professional courses and colleges in other states is among the reasons for the situation.According to official figures, there are around 47,000 seats, including 40,000 general and 7,000 vocational, in RU’s 19 constituent, 17 minority and other affiliated colleges. The admission process started through the Chancellor Portal on May 25, and the last date has been extended thrice during the last three and half months.
Though colleges have begun classes from the first week of August, they are continuing the admission process in several subjects. So far, 71,100 students have applied for various courses in RU colleges, but the actual number of those enrolled as of Tuesday is only 37,700. The colleges will be publishing the last list for admission in mid-September, and around 4,000 more students are likely to enrol.Admissions in certain institutes like Marwari College, Doranda College, Gossner’s College and Ranchi Women’s College in Ranchi city and PK College at Bundu are satisfactory, while in others like Women’s College Simdega, Dumri College and Women’s College, Gumla, which have a student capacity between 200 and 250, it is far below the seat capacity.
However, there is a rush for some subjects, including English, geography, Hindi, history, political science, zoology, BBA, BCA, MCA and accountancy, while philosophy, psychology and sociology have very few takers. So far, the number of admissions in philosophy, psychology and sociology departments of RU is 330, 510 and 620, respectively, while the seats for them are around 1,500.Speaking on the issue, the principal of Doranda College, R K Sharma, said, “While our classes have started from August 5, we are still taking admissions and in many subjects like Khortha, Mundari and botany, many seats are vacant.”RU spokesperson and deputy director (vocational courses) Smriti Singh said, “After the Combined University Entrance Examination (CUET), the students have the option to take admission in colleges across the country smoothly. Many of them have applied in RU but are also waiting for better opportunities in other states. Lack of teachers in some subjects has also kept the students away. Many students want to go for teaching jobs, but there is little scope for them in schools in subjects like philosophy, psychology and sociology.
