Ranchi Welcomes New Year with Faith, Festivity and Family Outings

Ranchi: The city stepped into the New Year with a lively yet peaceful atmosphere as residents spread across the city to celebrate the day with prayers, picnics and leisurely outings.

From places of worship echoing with devotion to tourist spots buzzing with families and youngsters, the overall vibe of the capital city remained joyful, vibrant and well-managed.The day began on a spiritual note for many. Churches across Ranchi witnessed a steady flow of devotees who gathered for special New Year prayers and masses, seeking blessings for the year ahead. The calm hymns and prayers set a serene tone, as families lit candles and reflected on hope, peace and gratitude.“Beginning the New Year with prayer gives us strength and peace. We prayed for good health, harmony and a better year for everyone,” said Maria Xalxo, a devotee, after attending the New Year mass at St Mary’s Cathedral.Temples too remained crowded throughout the day. Devotees thronged the Jagannathpur Temple in Dhurwa, offering prayers while enjoying the panoramic view of the city from the hilltop. At Pahari Mandir, long queues of worshippers were seen climbing the hill to seek blessings, while Hanuman Mandir in the heart of the city remained busy with devotees offering flowers, sindoor and sweets.

The collective spirit of faith added warmth and positivity to the celebrations.“There was a long queue, but no one complained. People believe that offering prayers on the first day of the year brings blessings for the months ahead,” said Sunita Verma, who visited Pahari Mandir.Members of the tribal community marked the New Year with traditional prayers at the Sarna Sthal on Purulia Road. Families gathered in large numbers to worship nature, following age-old customs and rituals.

The Sarna Sthal reflected a quiet yet powerful celebration rooted in culture and tradition, highlighting Ranchi’s diverse social fabric.For those opting for outdoor recreation, Hatia Dam, Kanke Dam, and Getalsud Dam emerged as one of the most popular spots. Visitors enjoyed speed boat and paddle boat rides on the calm waters, making the most of the pleasant winter sunshine. Children, couples and groups of friends were seen capturing moments and relaxing by the scenic surroundings.“The weather was perfect, and boating made the New Year outing memorable. Speed boats and paddle boats were a big attraction today,” said Amit Soren at Hatia DamSeveral waterfalls in and around Ranchi also drew crowds, as people took short trips to enjoy nature. To ensure safety amid the heavy rush, police personnel were deployed at major picnic spots, dams and waterfalls. Barricading, patrolling and traffic checks were put in place to prevent untoward incidents and maintain order.
