Four-time NBA All-Star guard Trae Young expressed his excitement on social media after being traded from the Atlanta Hawks to the Washington Wizards following eight seasons with the Hawks.

“I’m entering this new chapter with great excitement, keeping my head high and my vision clear," Young wrote.

“It’s time to explore what’s achievable with genuine support and a clear vision. Onwards."

During his previous seven seasons with the Hawks, Young averaged 25.3 points, 9.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game. However, he has missed most of this season due to a right knee sprain and right quadriceps contusion.

Since Young was drafted fifth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Hawks missed the playoffs four times and were eliminated in the first round twice. The team’s best performance with Young came in the 2020-21 season when they reached the Eastern Conference finals, only to lose to Milwaukee.

“The last few years didn’t go as I had hoped," Young wrote. “My goal was always to bring a championship to Atlanta."

“Unfortunately, due to injuries, setbacks, and situations that didn’t make sense, we never fully realized our potential."

Young acknowledged the impact Atlanta had on him, writing, “The city that raised me and taught me so much will always be an important part of my story."

“However, the pain of staying the same eventually outweighed the uncertainty of change. Change is often met with fear, but I see it as another opportunity."

At age 27, Young leaves the Hawks, who are currently 18-21 and ninth in the Eastern Conference, after playing 493 games, all as a starter. He joins a Wizards team that ranks 10-26, second-to-last in the East.

The Wizards confirmed the trade details on Friday, which involves sending swingman Corey Kispert and guard CJ McCollum to Atlanta.

“It’s a rare opportunity to acquire a player of Trae’s calibre, accomplishments, and age," said Wizards general manager Will Dawkins. “Trae’s style of play is exciting, and he brings a level of confidence and competitiveness that stands out in the league."

Young averaged more than 25 points and 10 assists in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, a feat also achieved only by Nikola Jokic, Russell Westbrook, and Oscar Robertson.

In the 2021-22 season, Young led the NBA in points and assists, joining Nate Archibald in 1972-73 as the only players to accomplish such a double.
