The West Bengal BJP took a dig at the controversy surrounding the attack on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, who was pelted with eggs and stones during a visit to a party worker’s residence.

The incident occurred in Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, where Abhishek Banerjee had travelled to meet victims of post-election violence. Abhishek was confronted by an agitated crowd, who raised “chor, chor" slogans at him and hurled eggs and shoes at him.

Abhishek alleged that he had become a victim of political violence and accused the BJP of orchestrating the incident. The attack was strongly condemned by INDIA bloc leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav and more, who alleged that the BJP was carrying out a politics of vendetta.

BJP’s ‘Stale Drama’ Jibe

Meanwhile, the BJP hit back at the controversy with a cryptic post on X, saying, “The drama is stale and no more eggciting", a reference to Banerjee allegedly being hit with eggs during his Sonarpur visit.

The BJP also likened the controversy to a poorly written movie, saying, “Sometimes the script is so weak and the acting so bad, people watch a movie just for laughs."

The saffron party said that while the attack on Abhishek was condemnable, it was also a result of internal divisions within the Trinamool Congress and the people’s anger against the party. West Bengal minister Agnimitra Paul also dismissed allegations against the BJP, describing the incident as a manifestation of public anger against the TMC.

“What we are witnessing these days is genuine public anger—pure public anger," Paul said. She accused Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress of engaging in “atrocities, vindictive politics, and violent clashes" over the past 15 years.

Meanwhile, five people have been arrested in connection with the assault on Abhishek Banerjee. Among those arrested are Tapan Maity and Nirmalya Sengupta, who are believed to be close to former TMC MLA Lovely Maitra.

Akash Gayen, who was arrested in connection with the incident, is known in the area as a TMC worker. His mother acknowledged that he had been associated with the party and claimed that he regularly sat at TMC booths during elections.
