The Kerala High Court has appointed Arjun Sreedhar as the amicus curiae to assist the court, in a public interest litigation filed by T.N. Pratapan, former MP and the chairman of Kerala Fishermen Coordination Committee, seeking compensation for fishermen and others who have been affected by the sinking of MSC Elsa 3 – a Liberia-flagged container vessel that was carrying hazardous and other cargo – off the Alappuzha coast on May 25.
The court had on Thursday said that the expenses towards compensation, to mitigate pollution and all other expenses in the wake of the ship sinking of the ship and a massive fire on board another ship off the Beypore coast during the past fortnight, must be recovered from the owner firms of the vessels, and must not be spent from the public exchequer.
