Antoine Semenyo, who has hit the ground running since his blockbuster move to Premier League giants Manchester City from Bournemouth, netted his second goal for the club in their EFL Cup tie against Newcastle in a 2-0 win over the Toon army.
Semenyo and Rayan Cherki netted to help Pep Guardiola and Co. secure an advantage over Newcastle ahead of the second leg of the semifinal of the cup competition.
Semeyo opened the scoring in the 53rd minute as he arrived at the far post before tapping the ball into a gaping net to give his side the lead before summer signing Cherki put the result of the game beyond doubt with his insurance goal in the third minute of added time.
Semeyo, who netted on his City debut in the FA Cup clash against Exeter in a massive 10-1 win for the Mancunian side, nearly added his second of the evening against Newcastle only to see it ruled out, a decision the Ghanaian international wasn’t much appreciate of.
“The second goal should have counted", the winger opined following the conclusion of the game.
City splashed £65 million to enlist the services of the 26-year-old Ghanaian international, who has 10 goals in the English top-flight this season, on a five and a half year deal.
City will host Newcastle in the second leg of the EFL Cup semifinal on the 5th of February with a two-goal lead working in their favour before the home game.
City are placed second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Arsenal at the ed of 21 games in the ongoing season of the English top-flight, and roped in Semeyo to add firepower as Guardiola looks to play catchup to his former protege, Mikel Arteta, who looks to bring the coveted title back to the Gunners after a two decade wait.
