According to an official statement here on December 20, the maternal deaths in Mysuru had declined to 11 this year from the 28 reported between January 2024 to December 2024.
The district’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) came down from 76.50 per lakh live births during 2024 to 30.20 per lakh live births during 2025, according to Reproductive and Child Health Officer Dr. Mohammed Siraj.
A statement here described maternal death as a death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postnatal period. “Such deaths occur owing to complications related to pregnancy. Major causes of maternal mortality include severe haemorrhage, infections, high blood pressure, unsafe abortions, and heart-related diseases,” the statement said, adding that maternal mortality has serious economic and emotional consequences for families and society.
A series of measures taken to prevent maternal deaths include the provision of iron and calcium tablets in a timely and continuous manner to pregnant women based on the information recorded in the Mother Card.
All private hospitals coming under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments Act (KPMEA) Authority are monitored and during the meetings of the Authority chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, penalties are imposed on private hospitals where deficiencies are found in the management of maternal healthcare, the statement said.
Emergency vehicles are deployed in identified vulnerable areas, with complete monitoring carried out from the district-level. The details of expected pregnancies are collected every month, the statement read.
While awareness is being created in the field level about the Kilkari helpline, which provides advice to pregnant women, its interactive services, and the importance of listening to the helpline’s messages, special attention is also being paid to adolescent girls with regard to pregnancy-related issues.
“Awareness is being created in the community about these issues as well as about the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and related cases,” the statement noted.
