Heavy snowfall across the Kashmir Valley on Friday disrupted air travel, forcing the suspension and cancellation of several flights at Srinagar airport and prompting airlines to issue travel advisories for passengers.
Confirming the impact of the weather, Srinagar airport authorities said flight operations to and from the airport were affected due to poor conditions, with multiple services cancelled.
Passengers were advised to check the latest flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport, officials said, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused.
Airport authorities added that snow-clearance operations were underway on the runway to restore normal flight movement.
In an advisory, IndiGo said take-offs and landings at Srinagar had been temporarily suspended due to snowfall, cautioning travellers about possible delays and extended waiting periods, both onboard aircraft and at the terminal.
“To ensure we are ready for departure as soon as we receive clearance, our team may complete boarding formalities in advance," the airline said, adding that it was closely monitoring the weather conditions.
SpiceJet also issued an alert, warning that all arrivals and departures at Srinagar — along with linked services, could be impacted. Passengers were urged to regularly track their flight status for updates.
The heavy snowfall also led to the closure of several key highways and mountain routes across the Valley, triggering traffic disruptions.
The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was closed near the Navyug Tunnel, while the Mughal Road and Sinthan Pass were blocked at multiple points due to snow accumulation.
The Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police said vehicular movement on NH-44 had been halted as a precautionary measure after snow and rain made road conditions slippery, particularly up to the Ramsoo stretch.
IMD Forecasts More Snow, Rain
The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir, including the Valley plains, with heavy precipitation expected at isolated locations.
Weather activity is likely to peak on Friday, followed by another western disturbance around January 26.
Tourist hotspot Gulmarg and higher reaches of Kupwara, Baramulla and Shopian received fresh snowfall, officials said.
A day earlier, parts of the Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, witnessed rain accompanied by strong winds, which uprooted trees at several places and led to precautionary power cuts.
