This year’s southwest monsoon is set to retreat from the entire country in the next two days, keeping with the normal schedule of around October 15, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday, adding that further monsoon withdrawal was realised along Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and the rest of northeastern India regions.
The line of monsoon withdrawal passed through Karwar, Kalaburagi (both in Karnataka), Nizamabad (Telangana), Kanker (Chhattisgarh), and Chandbali (Odisha).
This year, the southwest monsoon rainfall had ended at 108 per cent of the long-period average (LPA). Rainfall was normal or excess in all regions except some pockets of northeast India.

The IMD added that the northeast monsoon onset is expected around mid-week. “With the setting in of the easterly and the northeasterly winds over the southern peninsular India, south and central Bay of Bengal, the northeast monsoon rainfall activity is likely to commence over east peninsular India during the next two days,” the IMD said.
Southern peninsular India has been receiving widespread rainfall for the past few days, with atmospheric factors favouring the early onset of the northeast monsoon.
Also known as the winter monsoon, rains during October-December affect Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema (Andhra Pradesh), Yanam (Puducherry), Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, south-interior Karnataka, and Kerala.
In view of the setting in of the northeast monsoon, the IMD has issued a heavy rain warning over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe till October 20. South interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema will likely receive heavy rain till Thursday.
