Student Dies After Assault During Freshers’ Party In Latur College; 6 Arrested

A student died after being allegedly assaulted during a freshers’ party at a private college in Maharashtra’s Latur district.

In a disturbing incident, a student died after allegedly being assaulted at a freshers’ party in a private college in Maharashtra’s Latur district. Police have arrested six persons in connection with the case. The incident took place on October 8 during a freshers’ party at a prominent college in the MIDC area of Latur, police said.

A minor dispute that began while dancing at the event quickly escalated into violence when the victim, Suraj Shinde, argued with a group of fellow students. In a fit of rage, the group allegedly attacked Shinde with sticks and fists, according to the officials.

Shinde sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Following the incident, police registered a case of murder based on a complaint by one of the attendees and arrested four students by October 16, as per an official release.

Two more students were arrested on Tuesday (October 21) after their involvement in the assault was revealed, bringing the total number of arrests to six, the police stated.

All six have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons or means, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, officials said.

Police Sub-Inspector Suresh Pogulwar is leading the investigation into the case.
