A brutal case of alleged honour killing sent shockwaves across a village on the outskirts of Hubballi, Karnataka, where a young pregnant woman was hacked to death, allegedly by her own father and relatives, for marrying a Dalit man against family wishes.

The incident occurred in Inam Veerapur village of the Hubballi Rural Police Station area on Sunday, December 21. The victim, Manya, had married Vivekananda, a youth from her own village, following a long-standing relationship that began several years ago. While both hailed from the same locality, their union was opposed due to caste differences as Manya belonged to the Lingayat community, while Vivekananda is from the Dalit community.

According to the police complaint, Manya had firmly told her family that she would marry no one other than Vivekananda. Her father, Prakashgowda Patil, reportedly refused to accept the relationship. Fearing for their safety amid growing hostility, the couple went ahead with a registered marriage and later moved to Haveri district to stay away from the village.

Police sources said that after the marriage, both families were summoned to the police station, where efforts were made to counsel and reconcile them. Despite this intervention, tensions remained unresolved.

Seven months into the marriage, and with Manya in an advanced stage of pregnancy, the couple returned to their native village on December 8. Investigators said that news of his daughter’s return enraged Prakashgowda Patil. On Sunday evening, he allegedly arrived at Vivekananda’s house along with close relatives and launched a violent attack.

Manya was reportedly assaulted with lethal weapons, including a sickle and a sword. Vivekananda, his mother Renubva, and father Subhash were also attacked while trying to intervene. Despite resisting the assault, the pregnant woman suffered grievous injuries and collapsed due to heavy blood loss. She was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Police have named Prakashgowda Patil, Veeranagowda Patil, and Arun Gowda Patil as the accused. All three fled the scene following the attack. A special police team has been constituted to trace and arrest them.
