Constable Deepak Rout with his first wife Aparna Priyadarshini
Bhubaneswar: Suspended constable Deepak Kumar Rout (39), arrested on Sept 17, 2025, for allegedly murdering his constable wife, Subhamitra Sahoo, was on Monday taken on 1-day remand by Cuttack (rural) police for interrogation in connection with the suspicious death of his first wife, Aparna Priyadarshini, in 2022.Deepak earlier claimed that Aparna (31) died in a road accident in 2022. However, following his arrest for Subhamitra’s murder—who was insured for Rs 1 crore—the Khuntuni police registered a fresh murder case against him on Sept 19, 2025, citing doubts over the circumstances of Aparna’s death. The case was reopened after Aparna’s younger sister, Rosalin Rout, lodged a complaint at Khuntuni police station, just two days after Deepak’s arrest in Bhubaneswar.“We will interrogate Deepak to elicit the truth and establish the circumstances leading to his first wife’s death,” said an officer of Khuntuni police station.Rosalin, in her complaint, alleged: “Initially, we believed it was an accident. However, after Subhamitra’s murder, we suspect that my sister was also killed by Deepak. Both my sister and Subhamitra were insured for Rs 1 crore.”Police sources revealed that the 2022 investigation already cast doubt on Deepak’s version.
On March 19, 2022, he lodged an FIR claiming Aparna was fatally struck by a truck (registration number OD-02S-3486) 2 days earlier. Investigators then traced the truck and detained its driver, but found that the vehicle was not in the area on the day of the alleged accident. Deepak later claimed he might have misread the registration number in the darkness. With no conclusive evidence, police then submitted a final report true (FRT) to the court, acknowledging the incident but ruling that the identified truck was not involved. The case was closed until Rosalin’s recent complaint revived suspicions.
