Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the boxing ring as Christy Martin, one of the most famous female fighters in history. Her new movie, Christy, had its world premiere on Friday, September 5, 2025, at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada.

The film shows Martin’s rise from a small-town athlete in West Virginia to becoming a boxing world champion in the 1990s. It also covers her survival story after being brutally attacked by her husband in 2010. Directed by David Michôd, the film stars Sweeney alongside Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, and others.

To play Christy Martin, Sydney Sweeney gained more than 30 pounds and trained for months in boxing. She did real sparring in the ring, throwing full punches with her costars. She said,

“Every fight you see is real. We were actually punching each other, going full force.”

Christy Martin, born in 1968 in Mullens, West Virginia, began her boxing career in 1989.

She quickly became known for her powerful punches, finishing her career with 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws, including 32 knockouts. She became the first female boxer promoted by Don King, which gave her worldwide fame. She even fought on the undercard of Mike Tyson’s matches, making her one of the biggest female stars in boxing at that time.In 2020, Martin was honored with an induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, a recognition of her role in opening doors for women’s boxing.

Christy Martin’s rise, survival, and Hall of Fame legacy in new film

The movie also tells the darkest moment of Christy Martin’s life. On November 23, 2010, her husband and trainer, Jim Martin, stabbed and shot her inside their home in Florida. Despite her injuries, Christy managed to escape and survived. Jim Martin was later convicted of attempted second-degree murder and sentenced to prison.Director David Michôd chose to show both Martin’s victories inside the boxing ring and her courage outside of it.

Along with Sweeney, the cast includes Ben Foster and Merritt Wever, who play key roles in telling Christy Martin’s story.After its Toronto premiere, the film will be released in theaters across the United States on November 7, 2025. Industry sources say early test screenings were very strong, with some critics even suggesting that Sydney Sweeney’s performance could put her in line for her first Academy Award nomination.
