In the wake of the recent electrocution incident at Sabarimala that claimed the life of an elderly devotee, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) is exploring the possibility of replacing overhead power lines with underground cabling within the pilgrimage zone.

According to TDB sources, preliminary discussions on the proposal have already been held with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). “Details such as cost estimates and technical requirements will be addressed in the next round of consultations,” said a senior TDB official.

“Once the financial and technical aspects are finalised, there must be a clarity regarding the permissions required from various agencies, particularly for digging ducts along the trekking path to lay the underground cables,” the official added.

At present, the Forest department has granted permission to use a 12-m-wide stretch of land along the trekking route from Pampa to Sannidhanam. However, it remains unclear whether a separate clearance is required for digging trenches or if the existing approval covers the full scope of the project.

The safety concerns have intensified following the tragic death of 60-year-old Edukudy Bharathamma from Telangana, who was electrocuted last month at a water kiosk near Pampa while returning from her pilgrimage. The incident occurred as she approached the kiosk for drinking water.

Following the incident, the Department of Electrical Inspectorate has submitted a detailed report to the District Collector, offering recommendations to improve the safety of electrical infrastructure in the Sabarimala pilgrimage zone.
