In view of the upcoming Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC), Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and the municipal corporation polls that will be held in a few months, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is focusing on the vote bank of the Backward Classes (BCs). The party has elected leaders— Kimidi Nagarjuna from the Kapu community as president of the Vizianagaram Parliamentary segment and Prasadula Lakshmi Varaprasad from the Yadava community as the general secretary of the party. The ruling party is now hopeful of gaining back its prominence with the support of people from the Backward Classes.

Mr. Nagarjuna who currently serves as president of the District Cooperative Central Bank was given a second term as the president of Vizianagaram TDP Parliamentary constituency.

But the surprise came when the party elevated former Vizianagaram city president Lakshmi Varaprasad to general secretary of the Parliamentary segment. The move is being seen as a major political development with the municipal corporation elections scheduled to be held soon. Mr. Varaprasad’s family’s long-standing loyalty to Goa governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, and MLA P. Aditi Vijaya Lakshmi is seen as a key to his promotion. Additionally, his parents— father Prasadula Ramakrishna and mother Prasadula Kanakamaha Lakshmi— held the chairpersons’ post of the civic body for almost 15 years.

It must be recalled that the TDP won just one division out of the 50 divisions in the 2019 municipal corporation elections. The party hopes that elevating leaders from the BC community will restore its dominance.
