Jamshedpur: A 16-year-old girl was crushed to death when a passenger bus rolled backwards and hit her scooter. The deceased, Anjali Kumari, was on the vehicle while her cousin, Nidhi (11), was riding as pillion.
Anjali died on the spot, while her cousin was admitted to a private hospital with serious injuries.The incident occurred at Barigora railway crossing under Pursudih police station limits of the city on Monday. Police said that the driver of the bus halted the vehicle near the railway crossing as the gate of the level crossing was being closed. The driver allegedly left the vehicle after applying the handbrake and went for tea.Suddenly, the bus rolled backwards, possibly due to handbrake failure, and hit the scooter carrying the 2 girls, said a cop.After the incident, motorists who were waiting for the gate to open, along with pedestrians and local shopkeepers, became enraged and vandalised the bus.The crowd staged a protest, blocking the Pursudih main road, and also attempted to squat on the railway track, according to police information.
The situation was brought under control after the thana police reached the site and persuaded the crowd to calm down.“The driver of the bus is absconding, and the bus was seized. Investigation into the matter is going on,” said Pursudih police station in-charge, Avinash Kumar.The body of the deceased girl was sent to the MGMMCH for post-mortem.
