Tej Pratap urges younger brother Tejashwi Yadav to merge RJD into his party

Tej Pratap Yadav, the eldest son of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad, on Wednesday (January 14, 2026) asked his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav to merge RJD with his Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD).

Mr. Tej Pratap said this on the occasion of Dahi-Chura feast, which he has hosted at his official residence in Patna, inviting leaders cutting across party lines.

“JJD is the original party of Lalu Prasad ji, and I will urge my younger brother Tejashwi Yadav to merge RJD with my party,” Mr. Tej Pratap said.

The feast was attended by Mr. Lalu Prasad, who had once expelled Tej Pratap from the party and snapped even family ties with him.

After being expelled from the party in May 2025, he formed his own political party named Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD). He, however, lost the election from Mahua assembly constituency.

When Mr. Prasad had expelled him, he had written a post on ‘X’ saying, “The activities, public conduct and irresponsible behaviour of the eldest son are not in accordance with our family values and traditions. Therefore, I remove him from the party and family. From now on, he will not have any role of any kind in the party and family. He is expelled from the party for 6 years.”

Mr. Prasad’s tone was changed when he visited his residence to attend the feast and said, “I am not upset with Tej Pratap, he has blessings and he is doing good work by organising the Dahi-Chura feast. Everyone should organise it.”

However, his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav and his mother Rabri Devi skipped it. A day earlier, Mr. Tej Pratap had gone to Ms. Devi’s residence to hand over the invitation card to all three of them.

Asked about his younger brother not turning up for the feast, Mr. Tej Pratap said, “He gets up late in the morning. I have given him an invitation.”

The other leaders who attended the feast included Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, Janata Dal (United) leader and minister Ashok Choudhary. Even Governor Arif Mohammad Khan attended the feast.

When reporters asked Mr Tej Pratap if he had received any offers from other political parties, he said that he had been receiving offers from almost all parties, but he would decide at the right time. He also expressed that if an opportunity would be given to him for any post, he would like to accept it.

It is believed that after losing the assembly election, he is trying hard to become a member of Bihar Legislative Council and it can only be possible if ruling parties support him.
