A Central Asian country bordering China has reported 232 new measles cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 10,065, according to the National Centre for Communicable Diseases (NCCD). Meanwhile, 260 more people have recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 8,405.
According to NCCD, the majority of new cases in Mongolia are among school-going children who have received only one dose of the measles vaccine. In response, the NCCD has urged families to ensure their children receive both doses of the vaccine to protect against this serious disease.
Measles, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads via breathing, coughing, or sneezing, and can be fatal. It primarily affects children, but can also impact anyone with a weakened immune system or those who are unvaccinated. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash covering the body.
According to WHO, vaccination is the most effective method to prevent measles and curtail its spread, being both safe and vital in combating the virus.
Before the introduction of the measles vaccine in 1963, epidemics occurred every two to three years, causing approximately 2.6 million deaths annually. Despite the availability of a safe and affordable vaccine, measles claimed about 107,500 lives in 2023, most of whom were children under five. In Mongolia, the highest number of cases are found in areas with insufficient health facilities.
The NCCD has warned that unvaccinated children and pregnant women are at the greatest risk of contracting the disease. Experts have called for an accelerated vaccination campaign to effectively combat the outbreak.
