Locals say accidents happen almost every month as speeding vehicles at night often crash due to the bridge’s unusual X-shape, especially when drivers are unfamiliar with it

Madhya Pradesh’s unconventional bridges are grabbing national attention for their striking designs. After Bhopal’s 90-degree turn bridge made waves on social media, a Z-shaped bridge in Indore—featuring two sharp bends—has become the latest sensation. But long before these structures went viral, Balaghat district quietly set the trend with an X-shaped bridge built 15 years ago in Koylari village near the Seoni border.
Koyalari, a village at the edge of Balaghat near the Seoni district border, is home to an X-shaped bridge built around 15 years ago. When the Local18 team visited the site, a local resident remarked with a smile, “It’s a wonder, a real wonder."
While Bhopal and Indore’s uniquely designed bridges are now making headlines, Balaghat quietly set the precedent years ago. Such a structure is rare and remains a remarkable example of engineering ingenuity.
Locals shared that a recent accident on the bridge involved a dumper that rammed into it with great force, breaking through the railing and getting stuck. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, though the bridge sustained damage. The dumper was later removed with the help of a crane.
Locals claim that accidents occur on the bridge almost every month. Vehicles often approach at high speed during the night, and those unfamiliar with the bridge’s unusual structure end up crashing. Tragically, the spot has claimed more than a dozen lives over the years. Despite the recurring mishaps, the administration has not shut the bridge. Warning signs marked “Danger" have been put up on both sides, but accidents continue to happen.
Locals say accidents have become a regular occurrence on the bridge. Yet, instead of reconstructing it properly, authorities simply repair the damaged portions and reopen it for use. Frustrated by the lack of a permanent solution, villagers have now begun referring to it as the “bridge of death."
This critical bridge connects the main highway between Jabalpur and Nagpur, with approximately 1,000 vehicles crossing it daily, including those heading to and from Katangi. The unique structure surprises first-time visitors, marking it as a noteworthy engineering feat as well as a hazardous passage.
