Canadian swimming prodigy Summer McIntosh captured her third gold medal of the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Thursday, delivering a dominant performance in the 200m butterfly—just shy of setting a new world record.

The 18-year-old sensation touched the wall in 2 minutes 1.99 seconds, narrowly missing the world record of 2:01.81, set by China’s Liu Zige in 2009. It marked the second-fastest time in history for the event.

McIntosh was followed by American Regan Smith, who finished second with a time of 2:04.99, and Australia’s Elizabeth Dekkers, who took bronze in 2:06.12.

In a stunning display of raw talent, 12-year-old Yu Zidi of China finished just outside the medals in fourth place at 2:06.43—a mere 0.31 seconds behind Dekkers.

McIntosh Approaches Rare Feat with Third Title

With this victory, McIntosh remains on track to join swimming legend Michael Phelps as the only athletes to win five individual titles at a single world championship.

Having already won gold in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley, McIntosh’s performance has cemented her status as one of the sport’s elite talents.

“My coach and I, our big goal was to break that world record, and that was what we were training for," said McIntosh after the race.

“To see that I missed it by that little—overall really happy with the time and PB (personal best), but I did not reach my goal tonight."

McIntosh is not done yet. She is now preparing for the 800m freestyle, where she is set to face American distance legend Katie Ledecky, a four-time Olympic gold medallist and the current world record holder in the event.

McIntosh recently clocked the third-fastest time ever in the 800m, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown.

China’s Yu Zidi Continues to Impress

Despite narrowly missing the podium, Yu Zidi continues to turn heads in Singapore. The 12-year-old also reached the final in the 200m individual medley, finishing fourth—just 0.06 seconds shy of a medal in an event not considered her specialty.

Had she medalled, Yu would have become the youngest podium finisher in world championships history, dating back to the competition’s inception in 1973.
