Thanjavur Mayor S. Ramanathan has announced that the Tiruchi-bound buses — both TNSTC and private mofussil services — will soon be operated from the Omni Bus Terminus in the town.

Hitherto, the Thanjavur-Tiruchi-Thanjavur buses were operated from the northern periphery of the new bus stand, which was built in 1995 when the Eighth World Tamil Conference was conducted by the State Government in Thanjavur.

At present, the Thanjavur Corporation has taken up renovation of the bus stand at a cost of ₹2.50 crore. Under the project, it had been proposed to shift the operation of Thanjavur-Tiruchi-Thanjavur bus services to the Omni Bus Terminus which was constructed at a cost of around ₹10 crore released by the Union Government under the Smart City Scheme a few years ago. Further, the town services would be operated from the Omni Bus Terminus instead from near the vehicle parking lot on the New Bus Stand premises.

The Mayor told presspersons on Monday that the entry of cars, two-wheelers, and other private vehicles into the New Bus Stand premises would be barred and a separate way would be created abutting the New Bus Stand premises to ensure a link between Thanjavur-Tiruchi Road and the Vallam Quarry Road (recently renamed as Muthamizh Arignar Karunanidhi Salai).

The long-pending demand of commuters for clean rest room on the New Bus Stand premises would be looked into, the Mayor added.
