Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud on Sunday welcomed the unanimous passage in the Assembly of Bills providing 42% reservation to Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections, going beyond the 50% cap on total reservations.
The Assembly has accordingly passed two Bills, the Telangana Municipalities (Third Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Telangana Panchayat Raj (Third Amendment) Act 2025 on Sunday.
In a statement, the Congress senior leader said the decision reflected the aspirations of society and expressed hope that the step would be widely welcomed. He thanked Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the Cabinet Sub-Committee and Opposition leaders for their support in ensuring smooth passage of the Bill.
Calling the development ‘historic’, Mr. Mahesh Kumar noted that the move fulfilled the vision of AICC leader Rahul Gandhi, who has consistently advocated political opportunities for BCs in proportion to their population. He further said that under the leadership of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress would work towards extending similar measures across the country.
Meanwhile, celebrations were organised at Gandhi Bhavan here to mark the occasion. Party leaders led by Sangishetty Jagadish Rao and Mahila Congress president Sunita Rao distributed sweets and burst firecrackers along with party workers.
Mr. Jagadish Rao thanked the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, including Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka for their role in securing enhanced BC reservations. National OBC coordinator Kethuri Venkatesh and others participated in the celebrations at Gandhi Bhavan.
