The Chittoor Urban police on Sunday (August 31, 2025) apprehended two members of an inter-State gang involved in chain-snatching and recovered stolen property worth ₹25 lakh, including 192 grams gold, and two motorcycles.
Addressing a press conference, Superintendent of Police Manikantha Chandolu said that the gang operated in a calculated manner, stalking women walking alone in isolated areas and launching flash attacks to snatch gold chains before escaping on two-wheelers. “In the last few weeks, the police have registered eight cases, four in Chittoor corporation limits, one each in Chittoor Taluk, Punganur, V. Kota, and Madanapalle urban,” the SP said.
The SP formed a special team, with Deputy SP (Chittoor) T. Sainath, which carried out searches across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. “Through intensive surveillance and technical analysis, our team identified the suspects as residents of Tamil Nadu. Acting on reliable information about the gang’s arrival in Chittoor, two of them were intercepted at Chamantipuram locality and seizures were made on their confession,” Mr. Chandolu said.
The accused were identified as R. Amsayusan (26) of Mettupalayam, and Mohammed Pitha (25) of Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu. They are suspected to be part of a countrywide network of chain-snatchers, active during festivals and mass gatherings, particularly targeting border districts to facilitate an easy escape.
