Two women were charred to death in a fire at Velerupadu village in the Agency area of Eluru district in the early hours of Tuesday (June 2, 2026).

The deceased were identified as Palagani Savithri, 65, and her sister Pulamma, 61.

Two houses, including a thatched one in which the two women were sleeping, were gutted, the Additional Director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Services, G. Srinivasulu, said.

The fire was reported around 1.30 a.m., and the cause was not immediately known, Mr. Srinivasulu told The Hindu.

By the time fire personnel rushed to the spot, both houses were ablaze. Fire officers from the Kukunoor outpost responded to the call, Mr. Srinivasulu said.

The Eluru district police and fire department officers are investigating the case.

A resident of the village said Pulamma, a native of Suryapeta in Telangana, had come to her sister Savithri’s house and died in the fire.
