Good skin is reflective of your lifestyle habits. Experts urge that a skincare routine may temporarily help you, but what goes long-term is making sustainable changes in your routine. According to Dr Jushya Bhatia Sarin, all you need to do is follow two tips for brighter skin.
Using alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic or lactic, at 6-12 per cent, 2-3 times a week helps you achieve even tone and texture. This is because they remove the extra layer of skin cells that are holding skin colour, said Dr Sarin.
Dr Sarin mentioned that while lactic acid is a great product for those with dry skin because it is also a hydrating molecule, glycolic acid is fit for everyone else and specially those who have mature skin because it also boosts collagen synthesis.
2) Antioxidants
Dr Sarin mentioned that one should increase the amount of antioxidants in their skincare as well as their food. “While you may apply vitamins E, C, and niacinamide on your skin, you may also include richly coloured fruits in your diet,” said Dr Sarin.
Agreeing with Dr Sarin, Dr Akriti Gupta, cosmetic dermatologist from Jivisha Clinic New Delhi said, “Yes, both exfoliation and antioxidants can help achieve glowing skin.”
*Using glycolic acid or lactic acid can help remove dead skin cells, promoting a smoother and more radiant complexion. “Glycolic acid is an AHA that penetrates deeply, while lactic acid is gentler and suitable for sensitive skin. Use these products as directed, typically 1-3 times a week, to avoid over-exfoliation, which can irritate your skin,” said Dr Sarin.

*Incorporating antioxidants into your skincare routine and diet can protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals.

According to Dr Gupta, while topical antioxidants like vitamins C, E, and ferulic acid can brighten skin and reduce signs of ageing, consuming antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds can also support skin health from the inside out.
Dr Jatin Mittal, co-founder, cosmetologist, and skin expert from Abhivrit Aesthetics New Delhi said that maintaining a consistent skincare routine that includes these elements is key. “When using exfoliants like glycolic and lactic acid, follow up with a good moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and balanced. Sunscreen is also crucial, as exfoliated skin can be more sensitive to UV damage. As for antioxidants, they help in reducing inflammation and boosting collagen production, further enhancing skin’s elasticity and glow,” said Dr Mittal.
Combining these practices with a healthy lifestyle, including staying hydrated and getting enough sleep, can significantly contribute to achieving and maintaining glowing skin, experts urge.
