A 25-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide following a dispute with her husband, who later jumped into a river and is feared drowned, police in this Uttar Pradesh district said on Thursday.

According to police, on Wednesday night, Poonam hanged herself from the ceiling of her house in Bamhauri village under the Dhaurahra police station area after an argument with her husband, Ram Niwas.

Ram Niwas informed his parents and in-laws about the incident on Thursday morning.

Later, Ram Niwas reportedly went to the Sharda bridge in the Khamaria police station area, a few kilometres from his village, left his mobile phone and slippers on the bridge and jumped into the Sharda river.

Eyewitnesses said before anyone could intervene, the strong current of the river swept him away.

Poonam's body has been sent for post-mortem, Station House Officer (SHO), Dhaurahra, Shivaji Dubey said.

Officials from the Khamaria police station said a search operation to trace Ram Niwas is underway and divers have been deployed.
