The United States on Tuesday designated chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan as terrorist organisations, citing their alleged support for Hamas.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the designations were the first step in a wider campaign against the group. “These designations reflect the opening actions of an ongoing, sustained effort to thwart Muslim Brotherhood chapters’ violence and destabilization wherever it occurs," Rubio said.

He added that Washington would use “all available tools" to cut off the groups’ access to funds and resources used to support terrorism.

US President Donald Trump began the process to take action against the Muslim Brotherhood in November. The organisation was founded in Egypt in 1928 and later spread across several countries in the Arab world, becoming one of the region’s most influential Islamist movements.

The Trump administration said the Egyptian and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood were designated because of their links to Hamas, the Palestinian armed group that the US has long classified as a terrorist organisation.

The Muslim Brotherhood briefly came to power in Egypt after Mohamed Morsi won the country’s first democratic presidential election. However, Morsi was removed from office in 2013 following a military coup led by then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Since taking power, President Sisi has led a broad crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, banning the group and jailing many of its members. Egypt, along with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, has for years pushed for stronger international action against the movement.
