US Labour Department data reveals how much Walmart pays designers, software engineers, and other tech workers on H-1B visa

Walmart pays its highest tech salaries to senior product and engineering leaders, with base pay going up to $481,000 a year, data filed with the US Labor Department shows. It reveals details of salaries offered to foreign workers hired under the H-1B visa programme.

As per the filing, the retail giant has applied to hire more than 4,000 workers through the H-1B visa programme. The labor department data covers base salaries only and does not include bonuses, stock awards or other benefits.

Walmart’s H-1B hiring rises year-on-year

In the most recent reporting year ending September 30, Walmart applied to hire more than 4,000 workers through the H-1B visa programme. This marked a rise from about 3,800 applications in the previous year.

Most of the roles were in software development, data science, product management and information technology.

What software engineers earn at Walmart

According to the US Labor Department data, software engineers at Walmart earn base salaries ranging from about $99,000 to $286,000, depending on role and seniority. Senior and staff-level software engineers are among the higher-paid roles within the category. While the director-level positions in software engineering earns a base pay of up to $338,000.

Data scientists at Walmart earn between roughly $98,800 and $338,000. While senior and staff data scientist roles account for the higher end of the pay range.As per the data, product managers start at base salaries of around $121,000. Pay for senior roles can go up to $416,000, while group director-level product management roles can reach $481,000, the highest figure listed in the filings.Design and user experience roles also feature in the data. Senior UX designers and design managers earn base salaries of up to $286,000.

Where the jobs are located

Most of Walmart’s tech roles are based in its Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters and offices in California. Other positions are spread across Texas, New Jersey, Washington and Virginia.The data shows that while most of Walmart’s workforce is in retail operations, the company continues to hire across technology roles through the H-1B visa programme.
