A viral video has exposed a practice at IPL matches where snack prices are allegedly doubled by applying fake MRP stickers. Spectators are outraged by this alleged scam, with one clip showing Rs 50 chips being sold for Rs 100. This has sparked calls for boycotts and accountability from vendors and venues.
Watching an IPL match live is often sold as a “once‑in‑a‑lifetime” experience, with the massive stadium, the roaring crowd, the star players walking just a few rows away. But for many fans, the price tag stretches far beyond the ticket.
From flights and hotels to food and drinks inside the ground, the cost of “being there” can quickly spiral, and now a viral video has put one scam‑like practice under the spotlight.A short clip from an IPL 2026 match has gone viral online, allegedly showing vendors charging double the marked price for a common snack - sparking outrage and turning it into a symbol of overpricing and the possible “looting” of fans.

What does the viral video show
In the footage, shared on X and Instagram, a spectator is seen peeling off a price sticker from a packet of Bingo! Mad Angles chips.
The sticker shows an MRP of Rs 100, but once removed, the original printed price on the pack reads Rs 50.The video seems to have been recorded during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Rajasthan Royals match held on April 10 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The post accompanying the clip on X by the account @gharkekalesh captioned it, “IPL stadiums are looting fans? Snacks (normally ₹50) sold for ₹100 with fake MRP stickers peeled off to hide the real price.”
Is this legal or just ‘stadium pricing’?
The visible mismatch between printed MRP and the sticker price has triggered strong reactions. One user on X asked, “Isn’t this a punishable offence to surpass the printed MRP in India?” alluding to the fact that the MRP on a product is meant to be the maximum price a seller can charge under the Legal Metrology Act.Others, however, treated it as just another example of event‑zone pricing. One commented, “I think it’s fair. It’s the same reason why popcorn in movie theatres is overpriced,”drawing a comparison to how cinemas charge far more than market rates for snacks inside the hall.Another joked, “Sit at home and watch with the family—100 rupees will get you some awesome pakoras,” suggesting that the real cost of a live experience is often baked into such markups. At the same time, one person pointed out that such practices could be more than just “overpricing.” “Most public places are like this,” they wrote. “If MRP is there, if they implement a new price tag, it’s not just looting people but also escaping from income tax, how they collect GST on these prices.”
Fans call for a boycott
The video has also called for a boycott of IPL matches until venues and vendors are held accountable. One user urged, “Stop going to IPL matches. When stadiums start losing crowd because of overpricing and scams, the BCCI will wake up. Until then, nothing will change.”
