Draymond Green has always been known for his fire and leadership, but even the heart of the Golden State Warriors once ran out of motivation. After Kevin Durant’s exit in 2019 and injuries to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Green found himself leading a broken team.

The Warriors, once the NBA’s most feared dynasty, suddenly became one of the weakest squads in the league. Green recently opened up about that tough season and how he completely lost interest in playing.

The Golden State Warriors, a dynasty in ruins in 2019

In a new interview on The Boardroom, Draymond Green revealed how hard the 2019-20 season was for him.“We were awful. I had zero interest in playing. I mean, we had just come off five straight NBA Finals. We were the best team in the world, and now I’m out here with 10, maybe 11 guys who were out of the league within a year”, Green reckoned. Notably, Draymond Green had to play with a young and inexperienced squad that included players like Eric Paschall, Omari Spellman, and Alen Smailagic.

“No disrespect to them, but they weren’t Steph (Stephen Curry). They weren’t Klay (Thompson). They weren’t KD (Kevin Durant). They weren’t Shaun Livingston. The competitiveness just wasn’t the same,” Green said.He even remembered opponents mocking him. “And I was just going through the motions.

I remember being on the floor and hearing guys say stuff like, ‘Yeah, you old now, you can’t do it no more,’” he added. The team’s coach, Steve Kerr, tried his best, but the team was nowhere near the level of the Warriors that won in 2017 and 2018.

Golden State Warriors' journey from rock bottom to redemption

In the 2019-20 NBA season, Draymond Green averaged just 8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game. The Golden State Warriors ended with a 15-50 record before the COVID-19 pandemic stopped play.

It was their worst season in years. However, that fall turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Once Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson returned, and the team rebuilt its chemistry, the Golden State Warriors fought their way back to the top. Their 2021-22 championship run reminded everyone why they were once a dynasty.
