What makes Tortilla different from our desi Roti

Love gorging on rolls and wraps, but often find it confusing to decide which one is made with roti or prepared with tortilla? What is Roti?Indian flatbread which is also known as Chapati or Roti is a traditional bread prepared using whole wheat flour, salt, ghee/oil, and water. Similar in shape and texture, this flatbread is a staple in several Asian countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan.How is Tortilla and Roti eaten?Different cultures have different ways of eating these flatbreads. While Tortilla is relished as Burritos, Quesadillas, and Tacos, this thin flatbread is mostly filled with a stuffing and then enjoyed with dips.

On the other hand Roti is served with veggies, curries and fried delicacies. This slightly thick flatbread doesn’t have a stuffing.

What makes the two different?Tortilla and Roti are a lot similar, but what majorly makes them different is the use of flour, which gives the flatbread a unique taste and texture. Secondly, Tortilla is majorly used as a wrapping to create several dishes like Burritos, Tacos or Wraps whereas Roti in itself is a wholesome meal when served with vegetable sabzi, curry, curd or pickle. Lastly, the flour used for cooking and the way of cooking are also different, roti is often mixed with salt, ghee/oil, water and Tortilla is made with cornflour, baking powder and some water.
