Well known actor and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mithun Chakraborty on Monday (December 22, 2025) released a video statement saying that, “We will not allow West Bengal to become Bangladesh!”.

In the message which was circulated from social media handles of the West Bengal BJP, the actor turned politician tried to draw parallels between West Bengal and Bangladesh. Referring to the incident where singer Lagnajita Chakraborty was asked to sing “secular songs” the BJP leader said the in Bangladesh they are attacking harmonium and in West Bengal they are not allowed to sing.

“The mother whose blessings grant us heavenly love and prosperity is now being called communal under this nefarious regime. This is a shameful incident, just as the incident in Bangladesh where even musical instruments were not spared by communal elements! We shall stop this invasion of West Bengal by communal elements with all our might,”Mr. Chakraborty said.

Ever since violence erupted in Bangladesh, the West Bengal BJP leadership has been trying to draw a parallel between the situation in Bangladesh and West Bengal. The BJP has raised its pitch after the lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Das and have compared it with the communal violence in Murshidabad. On Monday, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari held protests outside Bangladesh Deputy High Commission.

“Those who killed Dipu Das and Dipu Das spoke the same language, yet he was dragged, lynched, killed, hanged, and burnt solely because he was Hindu. Radicalization in West Bengal is following a similar path under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. Hargobindo Das and Chandan Das were killed because they were Hindu,” the BJP West Bengal posted on social media.

13 convicted for Murshidabad riots

The West Bengal police on December 20 had said that such comparisons were “highly inciteful, factually misleading, and intended to disturb public order”. The West Bengal police had said that 13 accused persons were promptly arrested in the Murshidabad case, and a strong charge sheet was filed

On Monday, a court in Murshidabad convicted 13 people in connection with the murder of Haragobindo Das and his son Chandan Das during the Shamsherganj riot in Murshidabad. Sentencing of the convicted will be held on Tuesday (December 23, 2025).
