Instagram has changed how people live, dream, and even define happiness. From travel goals to luxury outfits, social media often sets unrealistic standards that many try to follow in real life. The constant comparison has blurred the line between real success and online perfection.

Now, a Reddit post is sparking debate after a user shared how his cousin wants to divorce her husband; not because of abuse or betrayal, but because he “can’t afford her Instagram lifestyle."

The story has opened a conversation about how social media may be shaping people’s expectations of marriage and life itself.

“My Cousin Wants To Divorce Her Husband Because He Can’t Afford Her Instagram Lifestyle"

The Reddit user shared two family stories to explain how social media and money expectations are changing relationships today.

The first story is about his cousin, described as a “modern, tantrum-throwing" woman who only wants a luxurious life. She first married into a rich family in 2018 but got divorced within six months, claiming her husband ignored her.

Years later, in 2022, she remarried a kind, middle-class man who runs a small shop. Everyone had warned her about his modest income, but she went ahead anyway.

After having a child in 2024, she went to her parents’ house for her delivery and later refused to return, saying her husband doesn’t earn enough, doesn’t take her travelling, and doesn’t give her the life she wants. Despite him hiring a maid and managing expenses, she continues to complain. Her family is now worried, especially since she refuses to go back to her husband with the baby.

“Another Relative Adjusted, And Now She’s Happy"

In contrast, the Redditor shared another story about a relative who married in 2005. Her husband earned little, and they lived in a small, rundown one-bedroom home for years. Yet she never complained and supported him through the struggles.

After 20 years, the couple finally bought a furnished two-bedroom house; a moment that showed the power of patience and teamwork.

The user also mentioned a third, shorter story. A family friend’s daughter, married less than a year ago, complained that her husband doesn’t take her travelling or spend much money. Her parents firmly asked if he had any bad habits or had treated her badly. When she said no, they told her to adjust and focus on her marriage. Since then, she’s been happier.

Online Users Debate: Is Social Media Ruining Marriages?

The post, shared a few hours ago, gained over 500 upvotes and several comments. Many users criticised people who expect their partners to fund their luxury lifestyle.

A user wrote, “Need a lavish lifestyle? Go earn on your own. Simple."

Another commented, “Lavish lifestyle sponsored by Daddy 2.0 aka Husband."

A person said, “That is on the girl and her parents, not right to ruin someone else’s life because your expectations are messed up."

One Redditor added, “apni mehnat ki kamai udaate time maut aa jati hai…..but only honest working people can understand this." Another remarked, “Good thing the husband is sensible. Support him fully."

Meanwhile, the Reddit user ended by asking: “Do you think social media is ruining marriages or just exposing mismatched expectations?"
