A day after K.G. Prathapa Chandran, the station house officer (SHO) at the Aroor police station, was suspended for allegedly slapping a pregnant woman, when he was the Ernakulam Town North SHO, the woman vowed to continue her legal fight against him.

N.J. Shymol, who was allegedly assaulted by Mr. Prathapa Chandran, on Friday (December 19), said that she was not completely satisfied with the suspension of the officer. “We will go forward with the complaint. I was not just slapped but was also insulted as a woman. We will do everything possible legally to get him the maximum punishment,” Ms. Shymol told reporters. She said legal action would be initiated against other police personnel who also ‘manhandled’ her at the station.

The incident that took place on June 20, 2024, came to light on Thursday (December 18) after she managed to obtain the CCTV visuals of the assault through an RTI query. Ms. Shymol was at the station after the police took her husband into custody after he reportedly filmed the alleged forceful detention of two youths accused of theft.

Responding to the release of the visuals, Mr. Prathapa Chandran had accused the woman of creating a ruckus at the police station and trying to hurt her infant twins, who she was carrying in her arms.

He said the woman’s husband Ben Jo was detained for allegedly helping the theft case accused escape. “She barged into the station and threatened to throw the infants to death and end her own life. She also attacked police personnel, including a female officer. We were only trying to save the children. I reacted when she pushed me twice,” he said before his suspension order was issued.

Ms. Shymol and Mr. Jo on Friday said the officer was time and again making false allegations against them, and that they would prove their innocence before the court.

Meanwhile, more people came out with allegations of assault and unruly behaviour by Mr. Prathapa Chandran on Friday. The police were yet to respond to the fresh allegations.
