Questioning the BJP’s opposition to Gandhi’s name, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Media and Communication Chairman Sama Rammohan Reddy alleged that only the British thought of erasing Gandhi’s legacy, and now the BJP is following the same path.

Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, he questioned why BJP leaders harbour such animosity towards Mahatma Gandhi that a scheme named after him is being changed. The BJP’s intention is not merely to remove Gandhi’s name from welfare schemes but also to remove them, he alleged.

Highlighting employment guarantee issues, he said Telangana has 53 lakh job card holders under the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) scheme and is entitled to 53 crore workdays. However, he alleged that the Centre reduced the allocation from 12 crore workdays last year to just 6.5 crore, causing grave injustice to the State.

“As per the 100-day work guarantee, this reduction means only about 12 days of work per person in Telangana. Under the Modi government’s new law promising 125 days of guaranteed work, Telangana would be able to provide only 10 days of work,” he alleged. He said that under the new law, the Centre has shifted 40% of the financial burden onto the State, effectively absolving itself of responsibility.

He warned that the Congress would expose the “true colours” of the BJP and take its alleged anti-people policies to the public domain.
