After Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi quit the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), his son Prateek has decided not to contest as a Congress nominee in the upcoming assembly elections, marking the latest political twist in the poll-bound state.

In a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek Bordoloi wrote, “With utmost respect and a deep sense of responsibility towards the party, I wish to convey my decision to withdraw my candidacy from the Margherita Assembly Constituency. In the present circumstances, following my father’s decision to join another political party, I feel it would not be appropriate for me to continue as a candidate."

However, Prateek reaffirmed his allegiance to the Congress, adding that he chose to step aside to ensure clarity and maintain the trust of voters and grassroots workers. He said the people of Margherita and committed Congress workers needed a candidate whose position was clear and stable at a crucial moment for the party.

“My decision is guided purely by my respect for the organisation and my desire to uphold the values and discipline of the Congress party. However, I wish to reiterate that my faith in the ideals of the Congress remains unwavering. I will continue to work for the party and for the development of Margherita in whatever capacity the leadership deems appropriate," he added.

This came after the senior Bordoloi resigned from the Congress on March 17 and joined the BJP the next day in New Delhi. Assam BJP has nominated Pradyut Bordoloi as the candidate from the Dispur Assembly seat. The Congress described his resignation as “very unfortunate".

Bordoloi’s exit from Congress is expected to be a major blow to the party in the upcoming state Assembly elections, scheduled to take place on April 9. Earlier, Congress’s former state president Bhupen Kumar Borah also quit the party and joined the BJP, leaving the party in a big turmoil ahead of the crucial polls.
