At least five people died in suspicious circumstances after attending a “tilak" ceremony in Mathiya village of Rohtas district, Bihar, officials said.

The event was held on the night of February 14, after which those who attended returned to their homes. A day later, Lallu Singh from Mathiya suddenly fell ill and died during treatment, police said. Over the next few days, four others, including relatives from nearby villages and two cooks who had participated in the ceremony, also died.

The sudden deaths have left the local community alarmed, with villagers speculating about possible causes, including suspected consumption of contaminated liquor at the function. However, authorities have not officially confirmed any specific reason.

Teams from the excise department and district administration have reached the village and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fatalities. Police sources said officials are probing all angles, and results of postmortems are awaited to shed more light on the case.
