In the quiet hours before sunrise on February 10, an unexpected moment of joy unfolded at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
At 5.17am, airport medical services received an alert about a female transit passenger in severe abdominal pain. The 26-year-old Tanzanian national, approximately 36 weeks pregnant, was travelling through the international-to-international corridor when her condition rapidly worsened. Within minutes, doctors reached her location and realised she was in active labour. What followed was a race against time that was handled with calm precision and remarkable coordination.
Recognising the urgency, the airport’s medical team immediately prepared for transfer. The expectant mother was carefully placed on an ambulance stretcher and escorted through the terminal with support from airline staff and CISF personnel. Terminal operations teams worked closely with immigration authorities to issue a temporary transit visa without delay, ensuring that administrative formalities did not hinder urgent care. By 5.40am, the ambulance had departed the airport, carrying the passenger towards a nearby hospital, with doctors and paramedics monitoring her closely throughout the journey.
However, the situation intensified en route. As the ambulance moved through early-morning traffic, labour progressed quickly. Inside the vehicle, the medical team sprang into action. With steady hands and clear communication, they assisted the mother through the final stages of childbirth. At 5.45am, a healthy baby girl was delivered safely inside the moving ambulance. In place of a hospital ward, there was only the reassuring presence of trained professionals and essential medical equipment. The newborn cried moments after birth, signalling that she was stable. Immediate neonatal care was administered, including clamping of the umbilical cord and initiating Kangaroo Mother Care to stabilise the infant.
By 5.55am, both mother and child reached the hospital’s emergency department, where further medical procedures were completed. Doctors later confirmed that both were stable and recovering well. The seamless coordination between airport medical teams, Terminal Operations, immigration officials and security personnel ensured that what could have been a high-risk emergency ended safely. For Mumbai International Airport Limited , the incident underscores the responsibility that comes with managing one of India’s busiest aviation hubs—a place where, sometimes, life begins even before the journey resumes.
