Ajit Pawar’s Last Rites To Be Held In Baramati With State Honours On Thursday

The mortal remains of Ajit Pawar will be kept at Vidya Pratishthan School in Baramati from 5 pm onwards today for people to pay their last respects.

Baramati Airport, where Ajit Pawar was set to land, has a flat 1,770m runway at an elevation of 604m. It is mostly used for training and general aviation. The airport faces several challenges, such as a lack of navigational aids. No night landing is possible, and an advisory-only tower increases the reliance on visual cues. Incidents often occur not because of the terrain but due to training mishaps.

A deep silence has fallen over Baramati after the mortal remains of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar were brought to the local hospital on Wednesday afternoon. He died earlier today in a Learjet 45 crash. The Maharashtra government has announced three days of state mourning and declared a public holiday in his honour.

Following his death, the state government said that all official buildings across Maharashtra will fly the Tricolour at half-mast for three days. All state-sponsored entertainment programmes and official functions have been cancelled as a mark of respect. Ajit Pawar served as Deputy Chief Minister for a record six terms.

The last rites will be held on Thursday at the Vidya Pratishthan ground, an educational institution started by the Pawar family. Preparations for the cremation have already begun at the site.

The Prime Minister spoke to Sharad Pawar to convey his condolences on the demise of Ajit Pawar. He expressed his grief and sympathy to the family.

A large and emotional crowd has gathered outside the Baramati hospital, where the bodies of Ajit Pawar and five other victims were moved after the crash-landing and fire at Baramati airport. Security has been tightened across the district to manage the arrival of supporters from different parts of the state.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde are expected to reach Baramati shortly to coordinate the arrangements. The final timing of the funeral is being decided in consultation with his family, including his wife Sunetra Pawar, son Parth, and cousin Supriya Sule. The funeral may take place tomorrow.

NCP working president Praful Patel, along with Supriya Sule and close family members, have rushed from New Delhi to Baramati. They are overseeing the handover of the mortal remains as the state prepares for the final journey of the leader fondly known as “Dada."
