India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, Bharat Taxi, will be launched today after a successful two-month pilot operation. Backed by eight top cooperative organisations, Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission and surge-free pricing model with direct profit distribution to drivers. It is an indigenous alternative to foreign investment-based platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
As per the official statement by the government, Bharat Taxi is supported by leading cooperative institutions like National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (KRIBHCO), Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and the National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL).
Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, and established on June 6, 2025, Bharat Taxi has been launched under the vision of “Sahakar se Samriddhi" (Prosperity through Cooperation) as an initiative of Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, a Multi-State Cooperative Society registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002.
As per an official statement by the government, over 3 lakh drivers have joined the platform since its launch, more than 1 lakh users have registered, and over 10,000 rides completed daily in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had announced the launch of the cooperative taxi service in Parliament in March 2024.
To provide easy access to the commuters and driver-members, the Bharat Taxi mobile application is available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The app offers various features, including mobile ride booking, transparent fares, real-time vehicle tracking, multi-lingual support, and round-the-clock customer service.
Furthermore, the application is also integrated with transit services, such as Metro rail, enabling users to book multiple modes of transportation on a single app. A tie-up with Delhi Police has been established to ensure safety for both riders and drivers.
