As Cockroach Janta Party's X account is blocked, 2 trademark claims emerge

Two trademark applications have been filed for “Cockroach Janta Party,” the political outfit that emerged after recent remarks by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during a Supreme Court hearing.

The development comes hours after the X account of the Cockroach Janta Party was withheld in India

According to records available on the Trade Marks Registry’s public search portal, two separate applications have been submitted for the wordmark “COCKROACH JANTA PARTY” / “Cockroach Janta Party” under Class 45, which covers legal and certain personal services.

The first application, bearing Application No 7737937, was filed by Azim Adambhai Jam for the wordmark “COCKROACH JANTA PARTY.” The second application, Application No. 7741481, was filed by Akhand Swaroop for “Cockroach Janta Party.”

The phrase gained popularity on social media after the Chief Justice, while hearing a matter last week, compared unemployed youth turning to activism through media, social media and RTI to cockroaches. The CJI later clarified that his remarks targeted people entering professions with fake degrees.

Amid the rapid rise of the movement online, two trademark applications have now been filed for the phrase. Both applications currently show the status “Formalities Chk Pass.”

Following the comments, the hashtag #CockroachJanataParty trended on social media platforms, with many young users identifying themselves as “cockroaches” who were unafraid to question the system.

Abhijeet Dipke, a political communications strategist who previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party, launched a page titled “Cockroach Janata Party” along with its social media accounts. Within days, the accounts on X and Instagram gathered millions of followers.

The X handle of “Cockroach Janata Party” was suspended on Wednesday following a legal demand from the Government of India.
